711 families affected by flooding in Kailali and Kanchanpur
Due to continuous rain since Sunday night, most of the market areas of Dhangadhi sub-metropolitan city were flooded on Monday. Due to the rains, 701 households have been affected in Dhangadhi sub-metropolitan and Godavari municipalities.
According to the district administration office, Dhangadhi-7 and 13 have been submerged due to the flood of Mohana river. In other wards of Dhangadhi, 20 houses in Chattakpur, 20 in Sri Lanka, Rajpur, 30 near electricity office, 60 behind Tikaliani, Milanchowk, 20 in Taranagar, 1 house near Trivenighat and the most 100 houses in Shivnagar have been affected. On the other hand, 200 households in Godavari Municipality-4 and 250 households in Ward 5 have been affected.
It is still raining till Monday night . Locals have said that water has entered the ground floor of most of the houses in the affected area. 4 people from a house completely displaced by the flooding of Dhangadhi-7 Belly have been moved to a safe place. In the last 24 hours, 213.2 mm of rain has been measured in Dhangadhi Airport area and 271 mm in Kanchanpur according to the data of the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology.
According to the measurement at 5 pm on Monday, the water level in the main rivers of Kailali is below the danger level. The department said that although the water level in Karnali river is increasing, it has not crossed the danger level. The Dhangadhi market area, which is the temporary capital of Sudurpaschim Province, gets flooded every year during the drought. Even with normal rains, places like Ratopul, Hasanpur, Shivnagar, Vishalnagar, Campus Road etc. in the main market area are flooded. Because of this, settlements, roads, health services and schools are affected.
The residents of the sub-metropolitan area say that there is no suitable sewer for draining rainwater and they are facing such problems due to the encroachment of the river. They complain that the local government expected to get rid of the flooding if they made proper arrangements for drainage, but the same problem has happened again. Dhangadi has been more affected by less water this year than last year. If it rains on Monday night too, the risk of flooding will increase in many settlements, said Shivraj Joshi, Information Officer of the District Administration Office.
He says that Kailali is a hot area and the problem of flooding is more. According to him, Tikapur and Bhajani Municipalities in Kailali, floods in Janaki Rural Municipality and Chure and Mohanyal Rural Municipality in hilly areas are at high risk of landslides due to their sandy soil. In Kailali, the floods of rivers such as Mohana, Kanari, Kandra, Pathraiya, Karasa, which came out of Chure, have been entering the settlements. However, in Dhangadhi and Godavari areas, due to uncontrolled migration and haphazard urbanization, the problem of flooding is increasing due to lack of drainage, says Joshi, an information officer. Neither the province nor the local level has a solid long-term plan to prevent floods and inundation in Dhangadhi, which is the temporary capital of the province. Information Officer Joshi says that for a long-term solution to the flooding problem in Kailali, coordination of all three levels of government is necessary to prevent the encroachment of proper drains, organized settlements and river channels.
