A year has passed since the suspension bridge brought from Achham to Dailekh for the transportation of daily consumables over the Khachhad Karnali river was damaged by an iron stick. On June 27, 2081, the suspension bridge from Panchdeval Vinayak Municipality-9 of Achham to Athabis Municipality-4 of Dailekh in Khidkijeula Bazar was unable to bear the load of 14 heavy khachds and collapsed due to the sticking of sticks.
The bridge was blocked by the local administration at the time when Khachhad got stuck back to Kolte and after that. Although the administration insisted that people should not cross the bridge by wrapping the barbed wire, the locals removed the barbed wire. Locals of Achham and Dailekh have been traveling riskily for a year on the bridge that returned to Kolte after the sticks were cut. At that time, after getting stuck on the dilapidated suspension bridge for more than 8 hours, there was talk from the streets to the House, but the problem remained the same for a year.
A new bridge was already being built about 300 meters below the bridge that collapsed due to a stick. The bridge was built targeting a local settlement. The monitoring by various agencies of the government prepared a report that there is no need to build the bridge as there is another bridge nearby.
With the said report, the issue of constructing or repairing the suspension bridge was closed . But due to some social customs, superstitions, etc., the report did not point out the social reason why menstruating and pregnant women cannot cross the bridge. The impact of which is still being felt.
According to Panchadeval Vinayak Municipality-9 President Ram Prasad Jaisi, the locals had already requested not to build a bridge at that place because there are temples of Ninel deity on both sides of the newly constructed bridge. He said that the locals have already demanded that the bridge be built 10 meters below, saying that pregnant and menstruating people cannot go because it is connected with religious beliefs. He said that while carrying Nainel, who is considered as the great deity of Dailekh and Achham, to Karnali, it was easily pulled by making a rope of thituva (thread), so there is a history of building temples on both sides of that place as a tribute to him.
It is believed that it is possible only because of the divine power to make a bridge of raw thread to easily cross the deity . Even menstruating and pregnant women are afraid to go to the temple of such a great believed deity. There is a big festival here on Jeth Purnima," he said, "There is still a dispute between the Dhami of the Nainel deity and the locals saying that a bridge cannot be built where there is a temple. As pregnant and menstruating people could not go, the deity's Dhami demanded that it should be built below the temple.
The technical staff for the survey of the bridge, whose construction started 3 years ago by the Ministry of Physical Development of Karnali Province, chose the place where the temple is and without listening to the locals, the technician forcibly built the bridge, he said. Menstruating and pregnant women do not cross this bridge as there is a temple of the big god in this area on both sides of the newly built bridge. 15-year-old Kavitasingh Thakuri of Athabis Municipality-6 of Dailekh, who is still commuting through the wooden bridge, said. She has given SEE from Chandika Secondary School in Chiltada, Panchdeval Vinayak Municipality-9, Achham. Since last June, she has been absent from class for almost a month and 6 days.
'It is not possible to go on the newly built bridge during menstruation . The old bridge is back to Colte . I was afraid to cross that bridge . Instead, it became easier to skip school for 6 days," she said. A lot of studies were missed. That's why the SEE has not been so good. She said that even now, more than a hundred students who go to study from Dailekh are affected. According to him, many Tatras who are afraid to cross the wooden bridge skip school 6 days a month.
Janak Neupane, the teacher of Chandika Mavi, said that there has been an increase in student irregularity recently. Some female students take risks and come to school. Most of the female students are absent from school for 10 days of menstruation, it is not normal to miss 10 days every month,' he said, 'students who were doing well earlier are now getting weaker.'
He also said that the school located in Achham side is only possible because of the students of classes 8, 9, 10. Teacher Neupane said that even though he suggested to come from the bridge where the temple is, the girl students did not come because of the fear created in their hearts.
