In Shuklaphanta, the labor force is decreasing every year

The number of endangered khar laborers in Shuklaphanta National Park is decreasing every year. It has been found that the number of khar laborers is decreasing every year. This year, from May 9th to 16th, according to the count made in the grassland of Shuklaphanta, only 4 of them, 3 males and 1 female, were found here, according to the park office. Last year, 5 were found including 3 males and 2 females.

Purushottam Wagle, conservation officer, said that 4 grasshoppers were found in the grasslands of the park through the vantage and sweep method. Those involved in the calculations say that since one male has one female, the number of real laborers can be more.

During the breeding season, male and female Khar Mazur often live together. March to May is its breeding season. At this time, the male does a jumping dance to attract the female (display). It is easy to calculate during this period as it is easily visible at that time. That is why it is being calculated. "During the breeding period, male and female khar majur are together, even if it is not seen in the count, it can be assumed that there may be a female along with the male," said conservation officer Wagle. This is called vantage point. On that basis, some technicians gather at each point and observe at least four/five hours in the morning and evening. The

vantage method alone does not show the real workers in all areas, so recently the sweep method has also been adopted. According to this method, the counters are standing at a distance of 40/50 meters across the grassland. Then everyone moves forward dragging the rope held by each other. In this way, even when hidden in the grass, it is more likely that the grasshopper will come out and be seen. That's why it has been calculated using this method in Shuklaphanta for the last few years.

This year, 19 technicians from Nepal Bird Conservation Association and Shuklaphanta National Park were deployed in the excavation of Khar Mazur from 9th to 16th Baisakh. The vast Shuklaphanta grassland of the park was calculated by dividing it into 6 blocks.

"In the vantage method, the enumerators only stand in one place and observe," Wagle said, "in the sweep method, you have to move by dragging a rope at a certain distance." That is why the accountants should work more at this time.

In Shuklaphanta, the counting of hard workers has started since 2013. At that time, 7 were found here. Since then it has been counted regularly. Due to proper management of habitat and lack of food, this bird has become endangered in recent years.
