Kuncha (migration) of the Vyansi Souka community living in Darchula has left for Thatathalo using the Indian route. Living in Vyas rural municipality-1, Kuncha of this community is forced to use the Indian road as there is no footpath in the country.
Kuncha, which fell in Bensi (around Sadarmukam) last November to escape the cold, has moved towards the mountains as the heat increases. Until two decades ago, Kuncha used to climb and descend the mountains using the country's own roads. Ashok Singh Bohra, Ward President of Vyans Rural Municipality-1, said that Kuncha of Vyans, who started moving to Vyans last week, is now visiting on a daily basis.
Some families have reached Changaru village of Kuncha Beas. Some are walking on the road. And, he says that some families are preparing to move from Bensi within a day or two. The families of Vyans Rural Municipality-1 living in Changaru and Tinkar Rural Municipality live in the Himalayas during the winter months and during the warm season. The Souka community has moved to 'Kuncha' from Khanalga, the headquarters, as the summer heats up.
75 out of 140 households in Changaru and 35 out of 71 households in Tinkar of Ward No-1 of Byans Rural Municipality have migrated. Due to the heavy snowfall in the Byans area in winter, the Byans Souka community used to live in Khanlgama, the district headquarters for 6 months in winter and in their own villages, Changru and Tinkar, for 6 months in summer. This migration of Vysanis is known as Kuncha migration at the local level.
It takes 5 days to reach Kuncha Changru village and 6 days to reach Tinkar village by using the Indian road. Byans rural municipality-1 Changru and Tinkar villages have no roads from the country, so they can use the Indian route only with the permission of the Indian administration. Omprakash Tinkari, a resident of Tinkar village, said that along with people, they have to go to their homes by obtaining permission from the Indian administration and quarantine.
Based on the recommendation of the Nepali local administration to use the Indian route, he says that the Indian side can go only after issuing a temporary permit for 6 months. There is another obligation to check the cattle quarantine while moving Kuncha through India. He said, "We should take India's permission to go to our own land. The government had to build a road through Nepal.
Vyansi people have been using India's road to move to Kunja for years. The Indian way is used for 5 days when Kuncha is repeated. On the fifth day after entering India through the Khalanga suspension bridge connecting Nepal-India, Kuncha enters Nepal through the Sita bridge connecting Nepal-India in Vyas Rural Municipality-1. While using the Indian route, Tinkari informed that they will reach Dobhar on the first day, Kimtola on the second day, Njyang on the third day, Budi on the fourth day and Changru village on the fifth day.
The Vyansi Souka community will reach Changru and Tinkar through India from the Sitapul crossing connecting Nepal-India. With the onset of summer, the people of this community moved to Kuncha with their children and goods. After the Vyansi Souka community returns to the village, the planting of dry crops including vegetables begins. Now some of the locals are farming, some are collecting herbs and some people are going to the Taklakot market in China for business.
Since there is no road from Nepal, the people of Sauka community are forced to use the Indian road from the past. The villagers complain that they have to suffer abuse from the Indian security personnel while using the Indian road, they have to get permission to use the road, etc. Even though the government has spent lakhs of budget for the construction and maintenance of the horse road leading to Changru and Tinkar in Byans, they are forced to use the Indian road because there is no road in both seasons of the Byans.
