Commercial flights have started from Acham's Kamalbazar Airport for the first time since Sunday. The Kamalbazar airport was destroyed in the year 2058 in the attack of the then rebel Maoists. Captain TS Nagarkoti of Tara Airlines conducted a test flight at the airport on January 13.
Minister of State for Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation Arun Chaudhary inaugurated the airport on Sunday. He said that efforts are being made to bring Tikapur of Kailali and Kamalbazar of Achham closer by air. "A plan will have to be made to bring in tourists from Tikapur airport to Ramaroshan in Achham," he said, "the airport will have to be black-lined."
Kamalajbazar Mayor Yagya Prasad Dhakal said that 4 employees including technicians are required for the operation of the airport and it will be managed by Kamalbazar Municipality. According to him, there will be a flight to Nepalgunj, which is 25 minutes away by air, one day a week at the only gravel airport. After a long effort, we have succeeded in opening it. Now everyone's cooperation is needed to continue," said Dhakal, the city chief, "The municipality will manage the staff required for the operation of the airport from the existing staff. Tara Airlines has already signed an agreement to train two employees who will work for the tower.
As there are financial problems for the regular operation of the airport, an agreement has also been reached to provide financial support to five other local levels that can benefit from Kamalbazar Airport. According to him, Mangalsen Municipality, Panchadeval Vinayak Municipality, Ramaroshan, Dhakari, Turmakhand Rural Municipality will provide financial support. He said that there is an agreement that 10/10 percent of the necessary expenses for the operation of the airport will be borne by 5 local levels and 50 percent by the Kamalbazar Municipality.
The construction of the airport started in 2049. The terminal building was demolished by the Maoists while the construction of the airport was being done by the consumer committee. After that, it was graveled after the federal government allocated a budget of 15 million in 2079/80 to upgrade the airport, which was turned into a cattle ranch for a long time.
