Most of the locals of Bajhang's Vikat Saipal Rural Municipality still have the problem of blindness. During the examination of 421 people here, 234 people had eye problems. The eye disease was detected during the examination conducted in coordination with Simkhet Eye Treatment Center of Geta Eye Hospital and Saipal Rural Municipality.
Among those examined, 26 people have cataracts and two people have eye problems. According to the team of health workers, they have to be operated on. The team reached each ward of Saipal and conducted an eye examination of the locals. Janak Kumar Bista, a health worker involved in the team, informed that free glasses were distributed to 176 of those tested.
Sagun Tamang, the head of Simkhet Eye Treatment Center said that there are more eye related problems in the residents of Saipal compared to other municipalities of the district. "Even though many people have cataract problems, 26 people need immediate surgery," she said.
We have to walk for four days from Saipal to the headquarters Chainpur Aujau . Locals say that since there is no hospital with facilities for eye surgery in Bajhang, they have to go all the way to Dhangadhi and they are unable to get treatment due to lack of funds. I can't even walk outside the house. If I go to Chainpur, I need a person to carry me,' said 78-year-old Rammati Bohra of Saipal-3 Kanda, who is suffering from blindness due to cataracts, 'We cannot afford to go to Chainpur. How to raise eyes after reaching Dhangadhi?' She said that it will cost up to one lakh for the person who carries it to Chainpur.
80-year-old Veerjite Bohra of Saipal-5 Balaudi said that despite being told by health workers that his eyesight would return after treatment, he had to live in the dark because he could not raise the expenses. "It is difficult to collect Chakalbasa (morning-evening) money". What should be treated?,' he said, 'I think that I would be able to see my eyes again.' But what to do just thinking about it?'
The problem of blindness was widespread in Saipal locals even before this. On August 24, 2077, after the news was published in Kantipur under the title 'Saipal's dark world', about 300 people with eye problems, in October of the same year, Tilganga Eye Hospital conducted a free surgery camp in the center of the municipality. In that camp, 511 people including 38 women and 23 men took eye treatment. 63 people underwent cataract surgery . Glasses were distributed to 380 people. After that camp, even those who were blind for 14 years got their lost sight .
Even though they are trying to conduct a camp with surgery in Saipal again, the rural municipality has said that it has not been successful. "Since it is not possible to take so many people outside for treatment, we are taking the initiative to run the camp in the municipality," said Manvir Bohra, village head.
