The government has decided to honor Nepali players and teams who win medals in international sports competitions with cash prizes.

Tuesday's meeting of the Council of Ministers decided to award cash prizes and certificates of honor to players, coaches, assistant coaches, physios and managers who have won medals in international competitions. The Ministry of Education and Sports had submitted a proposal to honor players with cash prizes to the Council of Ministers to honor and encourage players. Based on the same proposal, the government is going to honor players and teams who have won medals in international competitions.

According to the ministry, a total of Rs 105.148 million in cash prizes will be awarded to players, coaches, assistant coaches, managers and teams including physios as per the National Sports Development Regulations, 2079 BS (Second Amendment, 2082 BS). Although cash prizes have been awarded to international medal winners before, this is the largest cash prize amount so far. The government is going to award such a large amount of money as prizes for the first time with the aim of encouraging players and teams, the ministry has stated.

According to the annual program of the ministry, 101 people including medal winners in international competitions, coaches, assistant coaches, managers and physios will be honored with cash prizes. The proposed award list includes four medal winners of the 15th World Bodybuilding and Physical Championship-2024 held in Maldives. Similarly, 18 players of the women's team and 18 players of the men's team who won silver medals in the first Kho-Kho World Cup-2025 held in India will also be awarded.

Similarly, the ministry will also award three bronze medal winners of the UW Asian Belt Wrestling-2025, three bronze medal winners of the 10th Asian Para Taekwondo Championship-2025 held in Malaysia, seven bronze medal winners of the beach kabaddi women's team under the 6th Asian Beach Games-2026 held in China, and 17 players including the gold medal winners of the ACC Men's U-16 East Zone Cup-2025 held in Malaysia.

Similarly, a bronze medalist of the 57th Body Building and Physical Championship-2025 held in Thailand, a gold medalist of the Asian Pacific Motorsport Championship-2025 held in Sri Lanka, nine gold and bronze medalists of the ISF Gymnasiad-2024 held in Bahrain, and 20 players who won gold medals in the ACC Men's East Zone Qualifier-2024 held in Oman and qualified for the World Cup will also be awarded cash prizes.

The proposal prepared on the recommendation of the National Sports Council will be approved by the Cabinet, and the relevant players and teams will be honored with cash prizes, the ministry has stated.
