Mexico qualified for the knockout stages of the 2026 World Cup on Friday. The co-hosts also became the first team to reach the knockout stages. Mexico secured a place in the top two after defeating South Korea 1-0 in Group A.

The win gives Mexico six points from two games. South Korea, who lost, is second on three points. Despite the loss, South Korea's chances of advancing to the next round remain alive. The Czech Republic and South Africa are in the bottom two places on one point each.

Mexico will face the Czech Republic and South Africa in the final group stage match. Luis Romo scored the decisive goal for Mexico in the 50th minute after a goalless first half at the Estadio Guadalajara.

The only goal possible came from a mistake by South Korean Kim Seung-gyu. He easily guided the ball to the post by Romo. In the previous match, the Czech Republic and South Africa played to a draw.
