Tunisia have sacked head coach Sabri Lamouchi after a 5-1 defeat to Sweden in their opening match at the World Cup.
He was reported to have been sacked after Sunday's match in Guadeloupe, Mexico, but he was still training on Monday. However, the Tunisian Football Federation said the 54-year-old French coach's contract had been terminated by mutual consent. He has been replaced by another French coach, Herve Renard. Under Renard, Saudi Arabia won their opening match of the 2022 World Cup against Argentina.
Lamouchi became the first coach in World Cup history to be sacked after just one match. Tunisia sacked manager Henryk Kasperkzak after two matches in the 1998 World Cup after a poor start. South Korea sacked Cha Bum-kun after losing their first two matches at the same tournament.
Spain sacked Julen Laporte two days before the start of the 2018 World Cup. Spain were looking for a new coach after agreeing to focus on the national team but also becoming manager of Real Madrid in the meantime. But this is the first time Tunisia has sacked a coach, after their team lost a game at the World Cup.
Lamouche had been Tunisia's coach for just five months. Tunisia sacked Sami Trabelsi in January after a last-16 defeat to Mali at the Africa Cup of Nations. Speaking after the defeat to Sweden, Lamouche described the defeat as "sad".
"It's difficult to start the competition with such a bad result," Lamouche said. "We made a lot of mistakes that we didn't make before." We were shooting ourselves in the foot, we were hurting ourselves.’ Under his coaching, Tunisia had won just one of five matches, the first of which was a 1-0 defeat to Haiti.
Tunisia lost 1-0 to Austria and 5-0 to Belgium in warm-up matches before the World Cup. Tunisia is scheduled to play Japan on Saturday and then the Netherlands.
