The Nepal Basketball Association is going to hold the 10th edition of the National Open Women's Basketball Tournament.
Eight teams from all over the country will compete in the tournament to be held at the Kirtipur Indoor Covered Hall from Ashad 1 to 6, informed Chairman Bhim Singh Gurung at a press conference held on Friday.
It has been more than a decade since there was a women's national basketball tournament. Chairman Gurung said, 'It has been many years since we held a women's national tournament. We have been holding other tournaments. Due to various reasons including financial reasons, we were not able to continue this national tournament, but now we have set a goal to organize it continuously.'
He informed that the budget for the tournament is estimated at 1.35 million.
Women's national team coach Bikash Shahi said that 8 teams, including three from outside the valley, are participating in the tournament. According to him, the Annapurna Basketball Association of Kaski, Sunsari Basketball Association, Lumbini Province Basketball Team, ISA Nepal, Let's Go Basketball Academy, Training Ground Team, Budhanilkantha Municipality Team and Grande Stars Team will compete.
The winner will win Rs 50,000 and the runner-up will win Rs 30,000. The best player will get Rs 10,000, the emerging team winner will get Rs 10,000 and the emerging player from outside the valley will get Rs 10,000.
The previous winner of the National Open Women's Basketball is Prime Sports Club and the runner-up is Himalayan Whitehouse Basketball Club.
Players for the women's national team will be selected from this time's competition. That team will play in the South Asian Basketball (SABA) Championship. Coach Shahi said that the SABA Championship will be held in September.
Chairman Singh said that 50 thousand will be provided as financial assistance to the teams coming from outside the valley.
Technical Director Niranjan Satyal said that the participating teams will be divided into two groups and compete on a league-cum-knockout basis. The top two teams from both will advance to the semi-finals.
