The Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS), the umbrella organization of World Running, has decided to award this year's 'AIMS Social Award' to Nepal's Nepalgunj Marathon.

This is a very prestigious AIMS award selected from race organizers around the world. The award will be presented at the 25th AIMS World Congress to be held in Tromsø, Norway, on June 18-20. TS Thakuri, founder of Nepalgunj Marathon, said that he received information about the award and congratulations from the selection committee coordinator and AIMS vice-president Martha Morales.

Earlier, the Great Ethiopian Run (Ethiopia) in 2013, the Tokyo Marathon (Japan) in 2014, the Marathon International Lala (Mexico) in 2015, the Munich Marathon (Germany) in 2016, the Marathon de Los Flores Medellin (Colombia) in 2017, the Belgrade Marathon (Serbia) in 2018, and the Harmony Geneva Marathon for UNICEF (Switzerland) in 2019 received this award. Vice President Martha said that this award, which was held for a few years, will be presented from this year.

Vice President Martha wrote a letter to the founder of Nepalgunj Marathon, Thakuri, saying, “We are very happy to inform you that Nepalgunj Marathon has been selected as the recipient of this year’s prestigious AIIMS Social Award.” Martha mentioned that this is a highly respected award in the world of running. ‘Every year, it is awarded to such excellent marathoners who have demonstrated their strong commitment to the sustainable development of sports by presenting excellent practices in marathon organization,’ she said, ‘This special award honors the social initiatives and positive work that you and your organization have carried out in society.’

Nepalgunj Marathon has been continuously operating since 2015.  Even during the Corona period, Nepalgunj Marathon was responsible for selecting athletes for the Tokyo Olympics.  Nepalgunj started the marathon journey in 2072 BS in commemoration of 5 Mangsir 2063, when the Comprehensive Peace Agreement was signed to formally end the armed conflict.
