Sri Lanka has postponed its one-day and twenty-two international cricket series against Afghanistan in the UAE indefinitely.
Sri Lanka and Afghanistan were scheduled to play two T20Is in Sharjah on March 13, 15 and 17 and one-dayers on March 20, 22 and 25. “We had to cancel the upcoming series due to flight conditions and the conflict in the region,” a Sri Lankan official told AFP. It was the first time Afghanistan had hosted a bilateral series with Sri Lanka. But tensions have been high in the Middle East since the US and Israel launched attacks on Iran on February 28.
Iran retaliated by attacking Dubai, the UAE, and most international flights around the Gulf region have been affected. Afghanistan, which is recovering from the effects of the war, has not yet been able to host international cricket matches at home. It has been playing its home series in India and the UAE.
Sri Lanka had announced on Monday that they had appointed former South African Test player Gary Christen as their head coach. Coach Sanath Jayasuriya resigned after Sri Lanka failed to advance beyond the Super Eights of the Twenty20 World Cup, which they co-hosted. Christen is set to replace Jayasuriya.
Sri Lanka Cricket said that Christen had been contracted for two years, effective from April 15. Christen had previously coached India from 2008 to 2011. He led India to the 2011 ODI World Cup title. He also coached South Africa from 2011 to 2013.
