Abhik Shah and Anish Prasain's team Santa Xavier has won the second Himalayan Duo Chess title. Santa Xavier achieved success by defeating Ilam Height in the final of the tournament held on Saturday at Readers' Hub, Kaushaltar in Bhaktapur.
The top four teams of the league had the opportunity to compete in the semi-finals in the title race in the five rounds of the tournament conducted in the 'Bughouse format'. Santa Xavier, led by 1948-rated Abhik, topped the league with a 100 percent win rate. Nihana Shrestha and Rhythm Thapa's team Marvelous came second with four wins.
Ilam Height, led by Surendra Kumar Rai and Rabindra Shrestha, finished third. Patriotic Pan also made it to the top four by defeating Triyog High School in the play-offs after equal points. However, Santa Xavier reached the final by stopping Patriotic Pan, which included Prabir KC and Pearl Shrestha, in the semifinals. In the other semifinal, Hotel Ilam Height defeated Team Marvelous.
In the one-day competition organized by the Himalayan Chess Academy, only one FIDE-rated player was included in each team. The winner of the competition, in which family members, friends, school students, and neighbors were involved in team building, Santa Xavier received seven thousand rupees, a trophy, and a medal. The runner-up Hotel Ilam Height received five thousand and a medal, and the third-place Team Marvelous received three thousand and a medal.
The winning players were awarded by Bhagwan Adhikari, Chairman of Kavre Bethanchowk Rural Municipality, and entrepreneur Anup Acharya. Twelve teams participated in the competition organized at Young Learns (located next to Readers' Hub), the Jhaktapur branch of the Himalayan Chess Academy. Along with this, it is reported that the Himalayan Chess Academy, which was officially inaugurated on Chaitra 1, 2080, has organized 13 competitions including blitz, rapid, classical chess, and puzzle solving contests.
