Church Boys United has entered the semi-finals of the 26th edition of the international invitational Buddha Subba Gold Cup, defeating divisional team Nepal Police Club.
Church Boys defeated Police 1-0 in the second quarterfinal match held at Dharan Stadium on Sunday. Richard Wilson scored the decisive goal to secure Church Boys' passage to the last four.
Wilson scored within 30 seconds of the start of the match. After a scuffle between Police's Sanjeev Lama and Dipesh Gurung in the second minute of the match, referee Kobin Byanjankar gave both players a red card and sent them off the field.
Both teams were limited to 10 players each for the rest of the match. Most of the Police players who had reached Dharan to play Budhasubba less than 24 hours after losing 2-1 to hosts Jhapa XI in the inaugural match of the Jhapa Gold Cup looked tired.
Due to the Bhadragol calendar made by ANFA to tie the Gold Cup, Church Boys had to play Budhasubba and Jhapa Gold Cup on the same day on Sunday. Richard, who scored the decisive goal, was declared the man of the match and received Rs 10,000 in cash.
Sunday's winner Church Boys will now face the winner of the last quarterfinal match between Jhapa 11 and Satdobato Youth Club on Tuesday in the semifinals on Thursday.
Jhapa 11 defeated Royal Thimphu Football Club Bhutan to enter the quarterfinals, while Satdobato had already secured a bye and made it to the last eight. Before that, the host Dharan Football Club will face Pokhara's Laliguras FC in the third quarterfinal on Monday.
The final match of the tournament will be held on Falgun 2. The final winning team will receive a cash prize of Rs 1 million, while the runner-up team will receive a prize of Rs 500,000.
