Bangladesh has decided to withdraw its team from the Twenty20 World Cup in India next month, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) announced on Thursday.

“Our demand is only to play the World Cup, but not to go to India,” BCB president Aminul Islam Bulbul told reporters. The BCB’s decision comes a day after the ICC, the world cricket’s top body, rejected Bangladesh’s request to host its World Cup matches in Sri Lanka.

“There is no possibility of changing our decision,” said Asif Nazrul, the youth and sports advisor to the Bangladesh interim government. The Twenty20 World Cup is being held in India and Sri Lanka from February 7. Bangladesh is playing all its matches in the Indian cities of Kolkata and Mumbai. Bangladesh’s group includes England, the West Indies, Nepal and Italy. Nepal was scheduled to play Bangladesh in Mumbai on February 18.

The dispute between the two nations had escalated after Bangladeshi fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman was dropped from the Indian Premier League (IPL) team Kolkata Knight Riders on the instructions of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Mustafizur, who had previously played for various IPL franchises, was bought by Kolkata Knight Riders in December for $1 million at the auction. But Kolkata dropped Rahman from its team on the instructions of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

India took this decision against the backdrop of extreme oppression of minorities in Bangladesh. Bangladesh claims that the Indian media has exaggerated it greatly. But the removal of Rahman from the IPL has sparked anger in Dhaka. Bangladesh had said that its team would be unsafe playing in India for this reason.

The ICC on Wednesday had already said that Bangladesh's match in Sri Lanka could not be moved based on reports from independent security agencies that there was no threat to the Bangladesh cricket team in India. The virtual meeting of the ICC held on Wednesday gave Bangladesh 24 hours to secure its place in the World Cup. Otherwise, another team was informed that it would play in Bangladesh's place. Scotland, which failed to qualify for the World Cup based on its higher ranking, is likely to take Bangladesh's place.

This could also be a big issue for India. India is hosting the 2030 Commonwealth Games, which is believed to help India's ambition to host the Olympics in 2036.

‘Bangladesh is a country that loves cricket a lot, if 200 million people do not watch the World Cup, the ICC will lose a huge number of viewers,’ BCB President Bulbul said, ‘Cricket is re-entering the 2028 Olympics, Brisbane will also be in the 2032 Olympics and India is claiming to host the 2036 Olympics . In such a situation, not having a cricket-loving country like Bangladesh is a failure .’
