Nepal set a target of 123 runs against Thailand in the first match of the Women's Twenty20 World Cup Global Qualifiers on Sunday. Nepal, who were invited to bat after losing the toss, were all out for 122 runs after batting full at the Tribhuvan University Cricket International Stadium in Kirtipur.

Despite a brilliant start from Samjhana Khadka and Bindu Rawal, Nepal could not capitalize on the collapse in the middle order. Samjhana and Bindu had put on 54 runs in 6 overs. But after Samjhana was dismissed, Nepal's run was curtailed and wickets kept falling.

Samjhana scored 26 runs in 11 balls, hitting 6 fours. Bindu scored 44 runs in 56 balls, hitting 6 fours. This is also Bindu's personal best. Her previous highest score was 28 not out against Kuwait in 2019.

Vice-captain Pooja Mahato was out for 12 runs in 17 balls, captain Indu Burma for 6 runs in 6 balls, and Kavita Kunwar was out for 2 runs in 4 balls. Former captain Rubina Chhetri was out for 17 runs, hitting 2 sixes and 1 four. Kavita Joshi was out for 3 runs in 7 balls.

Sita Ranamagar was dismissed for a duck. Riya Sharma was dismissed for 4 and Suman Bista for a duck. Thipatcha Puthavong took 4 wickets. She gave away 27 runs in 4 overs. Onicha Kamchomphu took 2 wickets for 24 runs in 4 overs.

Nepal is hoping to secure its first win over Thailand since 2011. Nepal lost all three matches against Thailand in the triangular series last year. Thailand and Nepal qualified for the tournament by finishing as the winners and runners-up in the Asia qualifiers held in Bangkok in March last year.

Nepal, which is in Group ‘B’ of the 10-nation tournament, will play against the Netherlands on January 22, Zimbabwe on January 24 and Scotland on January 26 after Thailand. This is the first time Nepal is playing against Zimbabwe and Scotland.

Group ‘A’ consists of Bangladesh, Ireland, Namibia, Papua New Guinea and the United States. The top three teams from each group will advance to the Super Six. The top four teams will face each other in the Super Six and advance to the Twenty20 World Cup to be held in England and Wales in June-July.

In the warm-up match before the tournament, Ireland defeated Nepal by 99 runs and the United States by 6 wickets.
