Nepal suffered a crushing eight-wicket defeat to Thailand in the first match of the Women's Twenty20 World Cup Global Qualifiers on Sunday.
Batting first after losing the toss, Thailand achieved the modest target of 123 runs set by Nepal in just 16.5 overs for the loss of 2 wickets. Natthikan 5th played an unbeaten half-century in Thailand's victory. She scored 57 runs in 39 balls with 1 six and 9 fours. Similarly, Nanpat Kochariongkai scored 32 runs while Officer Shuwanchonrathi contributed 28 runs.
Except for Sita Ranamagar who took 2 wickets, no other bowler could bowl hard for Nepal. Earlier, Nepal was all out for 122 runs after batting full at the Tribhuvan Cricket International Stadium, Kirtipur.
Although Samjhana Khadka and Bindu Rawal gave a brilliant start, Nepal could not take advantage of it as the middle order collapsed. Samjhana and Bindu had added 54 runs within 6 overs. But after Samjhana was dismissed, Nepal's run was curtailed and wickets kept falling.
Samjhana scored 26 runs in 11 balls, hitting 6 fours. Bindu scored 44 runs in 56 balls, hitting 6 fours. This is also Bindu's personal best score. Her previous highest score was 28 not out against Kuwait in 2019.
Vice-captain Pooja Mahato was out for 12 runs in 17 balls, captain Indu Verma for 6 runs in 6 balls, and Kavita Kunwar was out for 2 runs in 4 balls. Former captain Rubina Chhetri was out for 17 runs, hitting 2 sixes and 1 four. Kavita Joshi was out for 3 runs in 7 balls.

Nepal has not been able to win against Thailand since 2011. Last year, Nepal lost all three matches against Thailand in the triangular series. Thailand and Nepal were selected for this tournament as the winner and runner-up in the Asian qualifiers held in Bangkok in March last year.
Nepal, which is in Group ‘B’ of the 10-nation tournament, will play against Thailand, the Netherlands on January 22, Zimbabwe on January 24 and Scotland on January 26. Nepal is playing Zimbabwe and Scotland for the first time.
Group ‘A’ consists of Bangladesh, Ireland, Namibia, Papua New Guinea and the United States. The top three teams from both groups will advance to the Super Six. After facing each other in the Super Six, the top four teams will advance to the Twenty20 World Cup to be held in England and Wales in June-July.
In the practice match before this tournament, Nepal was defeated by Ireland by 99 runs and the United States by 6 wickets.
