The Nepali women's cricket team lost to Ireland in the first practice match of the ICC Twenty20 World Cup qualifiers on Wednesday.
Ireland defeated Nepal by 99 runs at the Lower Mulpani ground. Ireland, who won the toss and elected to bat, scored 200 runs for the loss of 7 wickets in the stipulated 20 overs. Team captain Gabby Lewis 77, Orla Prendergast 62 and Leah Paul were 'retired out' for 21 runs. Sarah Forbes and Lewis put on 54 runs in 5 overs to give Ireland an aggressive start.
Forbes scored 15 runs including 3 fours in 12 balls. Lewis hit 12 fours and 2 sixes in 38 balls. Prendergast hit 8 fours and 3 sixes in 29 balls. Paul hit 2 fours in 19 balls. After Ireland scored 174 runs in 15 overs, Nepal finally caught the bowling edge in the last 5 overs under the bowling of experienced player Rubina Chhetri.
Rubina took 2 wickets for 17 runs in 3 overs. Riya Sharma took 1 wicket for 42 runs in 3 overs. Somu Bista took 29 in 4 overs, Kavita Kunwar took 29 in 3 overs, Manisha Upadhyay took 14 in 2 overs, Captain Indu Burma took 16 in 1 over, Rajmati Airi took 20 in 2 overs and Kavita Joshi took 33 runs in 2 overs.
In reply, the Nepali team was all out for 101 runs in 19 overs. Except for Bindu Rawal, Indu and Kavita Joshi, no one else could score double figures. Bindu, who was given life thrice in the first 2 overs, scored 25 runs in 28 balls, hitting 5 fours. Indu scored 12 in 10 balls with 2 fours and Kavita Joshi scored 28 runs in 29 balls with 6 fours.
Nepal lost opener Samjhana Khadka for naught. Kajal Shrestha 2, Pooja Mahato 3, Rubina 4 and Kavita Kunwar, Roma Thapa and Sita Rana Magar were out for 5 runs each. Rajmati remained unbeaten on 1 run. Prendergast, Lara McBride, Erlene Kelly and Amy Maguire took 2 wickets each for Ireland.
Both teams played a practice match, with 11 out of the 15 players allowed to bat and bowl. Nepal will play the second practice match against the US in Kirtipur on Friday.
Historic win for the US and PNG
In the other practice match of the day, the US and Papua New Guinea achieved historic victories. The lowest ranked of the 10 participating teams, the US, defeated Scotland by 4 wickets. Batting first, Scotland scored 149-6 in the stipulated 20 overs, but the US scored 153 runs with 7 balls to spare.
Papua New Guinea defeated Test nation Zimbabwe by 11 runs. Batting first, PNG scored 131-6. In reply, Zimbabwe could only score 120 runs for the loss of 9 wickets. Similarly, Bangladesh defeated the Netherlands by 26 runs and Thailand defeated Namibia by 7 wickets.
