The International Cricket Council (ICC) had granted Nepal the right to qualify for the Women's Twenty20 World Cup at the end of July. Accordingly, Nepal is to host the tournament, which will be held from January 12 to February 2.
However, due to the current situation in the country, it is uncertain what will happen to this tournament. Nepal Premier League (NPL) starting on Monday will decide it, says Nepal Cricket Association Secretary Paras Khadka. Bangladesh, Scotland, America, Thailand, Nepal, Ireland, Netherlands, Namibia, Zimbabwe and Papua New Guinea were supposed to participate in this qualifying tournament.
‘Only after how the NPL is conducted, will it be certain that Nepal will organize the Women’s Twenty20 World Cup qualifiers. The ICC is waiting and watching the NPL. This situation has come about due to the current situation in the country,’ said Secretary Khadka. ‘If the NPL is a grand success, it will prove that Nepal is in a normal state and the message will be sent that Nepal is capable of organizing international tournaments.’
After the NPL is over, Khadka announced that it will play against a Test nation before the Men’s Twenty20 World Cup. Treasurer Padam Bahadur Khadka says that CAN can earn Rs 400 million from the second edition of the NPL. CAN has estimated that it will earn around Rs 400 million from sponsorship, ticketing, OTT and broadcasting rights. It will receive Rs 154 million from sponsorship, Rs 90 million from renewal fees of 8 franchise teams, and Rs 53 million from OTT broadcasting rights.
CAN will get 71 percent of OTT. CAN says that it will earn Rs 10 million from local television and Rs 80 to 120 million from ticket sales. OTT subscription will cost Rs 300. OTT and Star Sports will come on clean feed. Advertisements will be played on Nepali television channels. After the reconstruction, the audience capacity of the Tribhuvan University Cricket Stadium Kirtipur has been increased to 9,450. Secretary Khadka said that only this number of tickets will be sold every day. CAN has also requested that if anyone has a protest program during the NPL, they should be removed from Kathmandu.
The prize money has been kept the same. Janakpur Bolts, the winner of the first edition, received Rs 11 million and Sudurpaschim Royals, who came second, received Rs 5.1 million. The third-placed Karnali Yaks received Rs 2.5 million and the fourth-placed Chitwan Rhinos received Rs 1.5 million.
