Namibian captain Gerhard Erasmus will play for Kathmandu Gorkhaz in the Nepal Premier League (NPL) cricket for the second consecutive year. Kathmandu Gorkhaz, owned by Kathmandu Sports Development Ventures Pvt. Ltd., has signed Erasmus as its second foreign player.
He has been leading Namibia continuously since 2019. Erasmus won the ICC Men's Associate Cricketer of the Year award in 2023 and 2024. On his way to becoming the Men's Associate Cricketer of the Year in 2024, Erasmus took 5 wickets for 28 runs in a World Cricket League 2 match against Nepal in Kirtipur in 2023, which is also his best bowling performance in an ODI.
Similarly, he also hit four half-centuries that year, including 52 runs off 31 balls against Scotland in the Twenty20 World Cup in the West Indies. Erasmus took a total of 18 wickets in Twenty20 Internationals in 2024.
He is already familiar with the Kathmandu Gorkhaz team. He performed brilliantly as the vice-captain of Kathmandu Gorkhaz in the first edition of the NPL. He scored 110 runs in 7 matches at a strike rate of 137 and took 11 wickets at an average of 11.90.
‘Erasmus played well for Kathmandu Gorkhaz last season, we are confident that he will play even better this year. He is also a good leader, which has benefited our team. He keeps the players very active on the field. Erasmus is an excellent all-rounder and an excellent fielder in associate cricket, I expect that it will be effective to have players like him in the team,’ said Kathmandu Gorkhaz coach Vasant Shahi.
The 30-year-old Erasmus has scored 2,178 ODI runs in 63 matches for Namibia at an average of 38.21 with 2 centuries and 17 half-centuries and 1,833 runs in 77 Twenty20 Internationals at a strike rate of 124 with 1 century and 13 half-centuries. He has also played for Gujarat Giants in the UAE’s IL T20 for the last three seasons.
He is the second foreign player Kathmandu Gorkhaz have signed for the upcoming NPL season. They have already signed Ricardo Vasconcelos, who was born in South Africa and is currently playing domestic cricket in England.
