Palace won the Community Shield

What you should know

Crystal Palace won the Community Shield for the first time after defeating English Premier League champions Liverpool 3-2 in a tiebreaker. Goalkeeper Dean Henderson was the hero for FA Cup winners Palace and made a brilliant save.

Henderson kept out shots from Alex McAllister and Harvey Elliott. Mohamed Salah also missed a goal in the penalty shootout and his shot went off the top of the post. For Palace, 21-year-old Justin Deveney scored the decisive goal from the penalty spot.

Palace, who won a title for the first time in the club's history in the last season as the FA Cup, achieved their second success at Wembley in the space of two months. Meanwhile, Palace has become the first team in 50 years to win the Community Shield on debut. Earlier in 1975, Derby achieved a similar feat.

After the scheduled match ended in a tie of 2-2, the competition went to a tiebreaker. Liverpool took the lead twice but could not hold on to it. Debutant Hugo Ekitike opened the scoring for Liverpool in the fourth minute.

Jean-Philippe Mateta scored from the penalty spot for Palace in the 17th minute to tie the game. Another debutant, Jeremy Frimpong, scored in the 21st minute to put Liverpool back in front. But Ismail Saar equalized again in the 77th minute for Palace. There was a provision to go directly to the penalty shootout after the scheduled 90-minute match.

14 teams that have won the Community Shield in the last 15 years have not won the Premier League. Liverpool will begin their Premier League title defense against Bournemouth on Friday.
