Brazil defended its Women's Copa America title on Sunday. They beat Colombia 5–4 in a penalty shootout in the final. The match ended in a 4-4 tie after regular and extra time. This is the ninth time that Brazil has won South American women's football's biggest tournament.
The finale was completely up and down. Colombia took the lead three times in the final at Ecuador's Estadio Rodrigue Paz Delgado, and on each occasion Brazil managed to claw their way back into the game. Marta equalized for Brazil in the sixth minute of second half injury time. She added another goal in the 115th minute to put Brazil ahead for the first time. But Lacey Santos equalized for the brave Colombia. After the
victory, Brazilian player Amanda Gutierrez said, 'I think women's football is expanding further. This has made international women's football more competitive. A game like today's final is needed to make women's football more popular. All players are entitled to this. We should also thank the Colombian team here.'
Both teams played aggressively from the beginning. It took 25 minutes for the first goal and Linda Caicedo opened the scoring for Colombia. Towards the end of the first half, Angelina scored a penalty to tie the game. Colombia managed to take the lead again in the 69th minute, although it was an own goal by Brazilian Tarsina.
Ten minutes later, Gutierrez equalized again for Brazil. It was his sixth individual goal of the tournament. In this way, Colombia was close to the first continental title in the history of women's football. But Marta, the substitute player who came towards the end of the game, returned the equalizing goal. With that, the game entered extra time.
Marta scored again but this time it was up to Colombia to equalize and it was Santos. In the tiebreaker too, Colombia took an early lead but once again could not hold on to it. Carabali missed a goal for Colombia in sudden death and with that Brazil was able to write the title for a record ninth time.
39-year-old Marta retired from international football after Brazil won the silver medal at the Paris Olympics 2024. But Brazil manager Artus Elias recalled Daker Marta to the national team for the pre-Copa friendly in May. Both scored 4 of the first 6 penalties in the
penalty shootout. Marta had the chance to beat Brazil in a penalty shootout. But her penalty kick was saved by the goalkeeper of the opposing team, Catherine Tapia. Marta was selected as the best player of the tournament.
