The ICC Women's T20 World Cup Qualifying Cricket Tournament will be held in Nepal. The International Cricket Council has chosen Nepal as the host of the tournament to be held from January 12 to February 2.
This is the biggest cricket tournament in Nepal so far. In the year 2023, the Asian T20 qualifying tournament was held for men. This time, the highest organization of world cricket, ICC, has given Nepal to host the global selection. The
tournament will be held at the upper and lower cricket grounds of Moolpani. The top four teams will qualify for the T20 World Cup in England and Wales in June. Bangladesh and Scotland have confirmed their participation in the qualifying tournament this time from the 2024 tournament in Dubai.
Thailand and Nepal from the Asia region and America from the American region have secured their place in the selection. Now 10 nations will play in the tournament, including 2 each from Africa and Europe and 1 team from the East Asia-Pacific region.
The 10 participating nations will be divided into two groups. Then there will be finals through Super Six. ICC said that the complete match schedule of T-20 World Cup qualifiers will be published later.
Thailand and Nepal qualified for the World Cup from the qualifying tournament held in Thailand in May. Captain Indu Burma said that they are enthusiastic because it is of great importance for Nepali cricket to be held at their home ground when they have qualified for the World Cup for the first time. He believes that organizing this competition is also an opportunity to introduce Nepal.
'For the first time, such a big women's cricket tournament is going to be held in Nepal. This is a proud moment for all Nepalis including the players and supporters, the new generation will have the opportunity to watch the game at home," Indu told Kantipur, "As a player, we are getting to play with a big team. We haven't been able to play much international cricket at home, there are still 4-5 months left for the T20 World Cup Qualifiers, if we prepare well, we can get good results at home. By playing in front of themselves, the audience also gets to know the players more closely.
Nepal has not organized any ICC or Asian Cricket Council (ACC) tournament in women's cricket. In the 13th South Asian Games held in Nepal in 2019, the women's cricket category was organized in Pokhara. After that, Nepal organized some bilateral and tri-national series at the Trivi Cricket Ground in Kirtipur.
In this sense, Nepal will organize two big tournaments of women's international cricket for two consecutive years. In 2027, Nepal is also organizing the ICC U-19 World Cup together with Bangladesh. According to the spokesperson of Nepal Cricket Association, Chumbi Lama, the decision of ICC to organize women's T-20 selection is historic for Nepali cricket.
"After the ICC's decision, we reviewed this in the board on Thursday, whether Nepal is getting a platform in global cricket," Lama said, "It is seen that Nepal can organize such a tournament successfully." The construction of a cricket ground in Moolpani has also opened the door for Nepal to host more international cricket tournaments.
