England take a 2-1 lead in the five-Test series against India after winning the third Test by 22 runs
England defeated India by 22 runs in the third Test at Lord's on Monday after a highly contested match. With this, England has taken a 2-1 lead in the 5-Test series.
Having set a target of 193 runs, India were bowled out for 170 runs in the last session of the fifth and final day.
India's last batsman Mohammed Siraj tried to stop off-spinner Soaib Basir's ball, but England won a dramatic victory after the ball bounced off the ground and hit the stumps. India had lost 9 wickets when they scored 147 runs. With the team 46 runs away from victory, Siraj came to the crease to support Ravindra Jadeja. These two played safe till tea time and took India to victory. But India's dream of winning only the fourth Test at Lord's was cut short when Siraj was bowled in unfortunate fashion. Jadeja remained unbeaten on 61 runs. He played 181 balls and hit 4 fours and 1 six. This is his fifth consecutive fifty in this series.
England captain Ben Stokes, who bowled two long spells, took 3 wickets for 48 runs. Fast bowler Jofra Archer, playing his first Test for England after more than four years due to injury, took 3 wickets for 55 runs. Lord's again became lucky for Stokes, who also led England to the 2019 World Cup at this ground. Player of the match Stokes, who also took 2 wickets in the first innings, scored 44 and 33 runs in both innings respectively.
India were 112-8 after lunch and at this point Jasprit Bumrah arrived to support Jadeja. Jadeja and Bumrah added 35 runs in 22 overs. Bumrah, who was out for zero in the last four innings, played defensively and scored 5 runs off 54 balls.
Both teams scored 387 runs in the first innings. England could score only 192 runs in the second innings. However, India started the day at 58-4 after Akash Deep got out in the last ball of the game on Sunday. India took this position to 71 runs. From here, after India lost 3 wickets with a gap of 11 runs, the team reached the position of 82-7. Rishabh Pant 9, opener KL Rahul 39 and Washington Sundar were out for zero.
England won the first Test in Leeds and took the lead in the series. India won the Edgbaston Test by 336 runs and leveled the series. The fourth Test will begin on July 23 in Manchester.
