Kathmandu Gorkhaz has appointed Monty Desai as their head coach for the upcoming season of Nepal Premier League (NPL). Kathmandu Gorkhaz, which is owned by Kathmandu Sports Development Venture, announced the appointment of Monty's coach through social media on Thursday.
Monty was the coach of Nepal for 2 years from February 2023. At the same time, Nepal won 11 matches in 12 matches of the World Cup League-2 and directly qualified for the 2023 ODI World Cup. Under Monty's training, Nepal played the Asia Cup for the first time and returned to the Twenty20 World Cup after 10 years.
Surajsingh Thakuri, chief executive officer of Gorkhaz, says that he has set a goal to keep the title in Kathmandu with Monty. "On the day of Guru Purnima, the Kathmandu Gorkhas got a Guru, the Gorkhas represent the Kathmandu Valley, which is the center of faith," says Thakuri, who took Monty after a lot of thought.
'Monty is a person who understands the Nepali players, understands the Nepali mind set, walks barefoot on the Kirtipur ground and understands the soil there and addresses the feelings of the supporters,' said Chief Executive Officer Thakuri, 'he was dreaming of Nepali cricket . That's why we took him because we can get something from Monty.'
Monty, who left Kathmandu only in February, is going to return to Nepal after 9 months. 'Nepal has always felt like home, the people here, their spirit and their cricket have given me rhythm in many ways,' Monty said in Gorkhaz's statement, 'Returning with Kathmandu Gorkhaz for the NPL season is not just an opportunity, it is a continuation of a journey, which I cherish deeply.'
