With Captain Richie Berrington's century, Scotland gave Nepal a target of 324 runs in World Cup Cricket League-2 on Sunday. Scotland, who won the toss and chose to bat after Barrington scored 120 runs, lost 6 wickets and scored 323 runs in the scheduled 50 overs at Dundee's Fort Hill.
After Barrington scored his sixth century in one-day internationals, Scotland managed to pose a strong challenge to Nepal. Barrington, who avoided getting out LBW in the first ball he faced, hit 6 fours and 4 sixes in the 114-ball innings. He was run out trying to get the third run off Michael Lisk.
Karan KC gave Nepal a great start by dismissing opener George Muncie for zero and Brandon McMullen for 5 runs within 6 overs. Then Barrington and Charlie Tier shared an important partnership of 94 runs in 127 balls for the third wicket. Opener Tier scored his second consecutive half-century against Nepal.
Tier, who scored 80 runs in the first match against Nepal in this series, added 68 runs playing 65 balls. He hit a total of 9 fours. Lalit Rajvanshi broke this partnership by bowling Tier. Finley McCreath, who scored a half-century in the last two matches, scored 17 runs and was cut and bowled by Deepandra Singh Airy. Dipendra soon dismissed Mathew Cross for 17 runs and strengthened Nepal's grip on the game.
But then Berrington made a solid partnership of 125 runs in 93 balls for the sixth wicket with Lisk. The catch left by Sompal Kami at Sandeep Lamichhane's ball for 14 runs cost Nepal very dearly. Lisk remained unbeaten on 96 off 62 balls. He hit 12 fours and 3 fours.
Mark Watt, who hit Karan three consecutive sixes in the last over, scored 21 runs in 9 balls and remained unbeaten. Scotland added 67 runs in the last 5 overs. Karan, who spent 19 runs with 2 maidens in the opening 5 over spell, took 2 wickets with 74 runs in 9 overs. Sompal scored 75 runs in 9 overs and Sandeep scored 69 runs in 10 overs. Dipendra took 2 wickets after spending 37 runs in 7 overs and Lalit took 1 wicket after spending 41 runs in 10 overs.
No changes have been made to the Nepali team that won the first 2 matches. Scotland is giving 'debut' to Mackenzie Jones. He was playing for Scotland's U19 team last year. Similarly, Charlie Cassel has returned to the team. Last year, he took 7 wickets for 21 runs in 5.4 overs against Oman on his 'debut' in Dundee, which is the best bowling performance of any player on his ODI 'debut'. Jones and Cole have replaced Jasper Davidson, Jack Jarvis.
This is Nepal's third match at Fort Hill. Nepal won an incredible 1-wicket victory over Scotland in their first match of this series on Monday. After Karan KC scored an unbeaten 65 runs, Nepal achieved the target of 297 runs in the last ball and chased the biggest run target in ODIs so far.
Nepal defeated the Netherlands by 5 wickets in their second match on Wednesday with Arif Sheikh's 78 runs.
In 14 matches, Nepal is in the seventh position with 10 points. Scotland is in fourth place with 22 points from 18 games. America is in the top 3 positions with 28, Netherlands 26 and Oman 24 points. The top four teams from the eight-nation League 2 will qualify for the World Cup. Nepal will end this League 2 journey by playing against the Netherlands on Tuesday.
