On the occasion of the 75th anniversary of climbing Annapoorna Himal, Kushal Purja of Annapoorna Rural Municipality-7 Gharamdi won the title of the Annapoorna 'Trail Red' race competition held in Myagdi on Tuesday.
Purja won the race from Annapoorna base camp at 4091 meters height to Annapoorna-4 Narchang village on the Maurice Herzog trail in two hours, 47 minutes and 37 seconds, covering a distance of 36 kilometers.
Lok Bahadur Baruwal of Annapoorna-6 Ghar completed the competition in 2 hours 52 minutes 51 seconds and Sanjay Bahadur Baruwal in 3 hours 8 minutes 37 seconds and finished second and third in the competition, informed Khadg Ranabhat, the founder president of the ex-players' forum.
40 runners from Myagdi participated in the competition which started at 6.30 am from Annapurna base camp. The winner, 24-year-old Purja, is an Indian Gurkha soldier, and the runner-up, 24-year-old Baruwal, is a soldier of the Nepalese Army.
The winner, runner-up and third runner-up will be given cash prizes of Rs 50,000, 30,000 and 20,000 respectively along with certificates at a ceremony to be held at Narchang Bensi, said Bharat Kumar Pun, chairman of Annapurna Rural Municipality.
He said that the competition was organized with the aim of promoting the Maurice Herzog footpath connecting Annapurna base camp. The festival is being celebrated today on the 75th anniversary of the first ascent of Mount Annapoorna by Maurice Herzog of France on June 3, 1950.
