The former winners Tribhuvan Army Club have made a winning start in the third edition of the Manmohan Memorial One Day National Cricket Tournament.
In the opening match of the tournament organized by MM Cup Foundation Sunsari, which started on Saturday, the Army won a hard-fought 2-wicket victory over the APF of the Armed Police Force, another departmental team. After losing the toss at the Girija Prasad Koirala Cricket Stadium in Baijnathpur, APF lost the toss and batted first. After a slow start, APF's innings sixth order batsman Prakash Jaisi and captain Bhuvan Karki tried to lead to a respectable score by sharing 53 runs. But after Karki got out after scoring 25 runs, Jaisi did not support the other batsmen and APF was reduced to 130 runs.
Jaisi played a 34 run not out innings. Deepak Bohora 16, Abhishek Pal 12 and Ayushman Bam could add only 11 runs. APF received an additional 15 runs as a gift from the Army. On the bowling side, Durgesh Gupta of Army took 3 wickets while Naren Saud and Vishal Susling took 2 wickets each.
With a winning target of 131 runs, the army came into batting in reply and finished playing 37.2 balls. Army started badly and lost 2 wickets to add 1 run in the first over. Opener Himanshu Dutt was ducked out in the third ball. Nischal Chhetri, who came after that, was also sent back to the pavilion for zero runs by Dewan Pun in the last ball of the first over.
Another opener Imran Shaikh got out after scoring 6 runs in the last ball of the second over. Army's bad start was not limited to this. After captain Vinod Bhandari was dismissed after scoring 8 runs in the fourth over, Naren Saud took over the innings of the army. Saud was dismissed after scoring 64 runs. Sumit Shrestha played a not out innings of 21 and Pawan Karki scored 10 runs.
Foundation president Biplav Ghosh informed that Sunday's match will be between APF and Bagmati Province. The competition has been moved to Biratnagar as the Jail Field Stadium in Inaruwa in Sunsari has been lying idle for a long time in the name of maintenance. Six teams including one Indian team have participated in the competition.
The winner of the competition, which will run until May 20, will get four lakhs in cash and the runner-up will get two lakhs and a trophy. According to the organizers, the best player will be given 25,000 cash and the best batter and bowler will be given 15,000 each.
