Saptari's Namobuddha Youth Club won the first day's match of the 17th edition of Saheed Bhimnarayan Gold Cup on Sunday.
Namobuddha defeated the host Shahid Bhimnarayan Memorial Foundation Dhankuta by 3-1. Namobuddha managed to score all three goals in the first half. In the 17th minute of the game, Nirmal Ghising opened the scoring account by making use of the corner pass.
Similarly, Miskan Das scored the second goal for Namobuddha in the 32nd minute and gave a wide result for the victory. In the 39th minute, Mohit Gurung managed to score the third goal for the team.
The only consolation goal for Dhankuta was scored by team captain Dipen Shakya in the 14th minute of the second half. The hosts missed some beautiful chances to score. The match started at 4 pm at Lower Tundikhel located in Dhankuta-5 had a significant presence of domestic spectators. Dhruv Raya, the head of Mahalakshmi Municipality, officially inaugurated the
competition. On Monday, the organizer said that the match between Boys Football Club Itahari and Gaighat Football Club Udaipur will start at 3.30 pm. Eight teams including 'A' division are participating in the
competition. In which there are Chitlang Football Club Kathmandu, Virtamod United Jhapa, Boys Football Club Itahari, Gaighat Football Club Udaipur, Belbari Football Club Morang and the departmental team APF Club Kathmandu along with the organizer and Namo Buddha Youth Football Club.
The winner will receive a cash prize of 5 lakhs and the runner-up will receive a trophy medal, cup and certificate along with 250,000 rupees. Similarly, the highest scorer, man of the match and best player will also get cash prizes. Shambhu Pradhan, the coordinator of the competition, informed that ten different sub-committees have also been formed. Coordinator Pradhan said that financial, publicity, playground management, stage, security, volunteers and first aid management sub-committee have been formed. It is said that the main supporter of the
competition is all the municipalities in the district including Dhankuta Municipality, the sponsor is Jagdamba Enterprises Pvt. Arrangements have been made to watch the competition games free of charge.
Birtamod United Jhapa Football Club won the Shaheed Bhimnarayan Gold Cup title of the 16th edition last year.
Purendralal Shrestha, president of Shaheed Bhimnarayan Shrestha Memorial Foundation, said that the competition, which started in 2055, has been running regularly since 2063 after a few years of postponement. The competition is being conducted in memory of martyr Bhimnarayan Shrestha who was sentenced to death in 035 for the charge of throwing a bomb at the then King Birendra Shah. Shrestha has been declared a martyr by the government in 074.
