Virat Kohli's unbeaten 100 runs led India to defeat Pakistan by 6 wickets in Champions Trophy cricket on Sunday. After Kohli scored his 51st century in ODIs, India completed the target of 242 runs by scoring 244 runs in the 43rd over.

Defending champions Pakistan are in danger of exiting the tournament after their second straight defeat. Pakistan was also defeated by New Zealand in the first match.

With their second consecutive victory, India have strengthened their chances of reaching the semi-finals. The participating 8 teams are divided into 2 groups and the top 2 teams of the group will advance to the semi-finals.

Captain Rohit Sharma could only score 20 runs from India. Shubman Gill, another opener, scored 46 runs with 7 fours from 52 balls. Shreyash Iyer also scored a half century. Iyer, who added 114 runs for the third wicket with Kohli, scored 56 runs from 67 balls with 5 fours and 1 six. Hardik Pandya was dismissed for 8 runs. Sahin Afridi took 2 wickets from Pakistan.

During his innings, Kohli became the third player to complete 14,000 runs in ODIs. Before the match against Pakistan, Kohli had scored 13,985 runs in 298 ODIs. India's Sachin Tendulkar (18,426 runs) and Sri Lanka's Kumar Sangakkara (14,234) have scored more runs in ODIs than Kohli.

Both Kohli and Rohit retired from Twenty20 internationals after leading India to the title in the Twenty20 World Cup in America and West Indies in June. Both these players were struggling to produce their best form in Tests and ODIs. As they could not score runs, there were rumors that both of them would retire soon.

Before Saud Sakil and Mohammad Rizwan played solidly, Pakistan were bowled out for 241 runs in 49.4 overs. Sakil scored 62 runs and captain Rizwan scored 46 runs, but they shared an important partnership of 104 runs in the third wicket. Sakil played 76 balls and 5 fours and Rizwan played 77 balls and hit 3 fours.

Opener Imam-ul-Haq scored 10 off 26 balls and Babar Azam hit 5 fours off 26 balls and was dismissed for 23 runs. Although Salman Agha was dismissed for 19 and Taib Tahir was out for 4 runs, Debrehate Khusdil Sah hit 2 sixes in 39 balls and scored 38 runs, but Pakistan's score on the slow pitch looked challenging.

Debrehate spinner Kuldeep Yadav took 3 wickets for 40 runs in 9 overs. Pandya took 2 wickets for 31 runs in 8 overs and Harshit Rana, Akshar Patel and Ravindra Jadeja took 1 wicket each. India, which refused to visit Pakistan, the host of the Champions Trophy, will play all the matches of the tournament in the UAE.
