Wrestling competition continues in Tilathi

The Saketchandra Mishra wrestling tournament has started from Tuesday in Tilathi of Saptari. In Tilathi, the wrestling game that is disappearing, the competition has been going on continuously for 17 years. Due to the corona epidemic, wrestling could not be held in Tilathi for two years. Due to the lack of wrestlers at the local level, wrestlers who have come for a fee are competing in the tournament.

36 male and two female players including Lucky Thapa from Rupandehi, Valiram Yadav from APF club, Sumir Sah from Birganj, Manoj Yadav from Bara, Baba Ladi from Haryana, India and Rizwan Gani from Jammu and Kashmir are competing. According to the organizing committee, 51,000 prizes will be given to the best wrestlers in the competition that will end on Thursday.

When the sport of wrestling is disappearing, wrestling is organized in various fairs and festivals in the rural areas of Saptari. Due to the lack of ready wrestlers in the new generation, wrestling has become extinct in the district. At one time there were famous wrestlers like Sakaldev Khalifa, Shyam Khalifa and others in Saptari. Currently, due to the lack of local leaders, they have to be brought from outside, so a large amount of money is spent on food and wages. In the past, most of the villages used to have wrestling patiyogita on the day of Govardhan Puja with the participation of local wrestlers. Those wrestlers who excelled in Patiyogita also went to other competitions. In recent years, the annual wrestling competitions in the villages have become less and less.

If the state can train and attract the new generation by investing, Dinesh Bhujel, Acting Head of District Sports Development Saptari, says that there is still potential in wrestling. In the year 2076, after the retirement of the then assistant wrestling coach Shyam Narayan Mandal, no wrestling coach has come to Saptari. Bhujel said that along with many other sports, the center has not sent a wrestling coach for a long time. He says, "There has been no wrestling related activity after the wrestler selection competition held in Launia in 2066. During festivals and fairs, wrestlers are brought from outside and an entertaining competition is held. Bhujel said that although some youths of Saptari's Balanbihul Rural Municipality are interested in wrestling, they also go to Siraha to play.
