The petition for the detention of CPN-UML leader Bishnu Poudel has been scheduled to be presented before a bench of Justices Binod Sharma and Nityanand Pandey.
Former minister Poudel, who was arrested for investigation in a money laundering case, is in custody by a special court order.
The Money Laundering Investigation Department had arrested him for investigation after he was found to be in connection with controversial businessman Deepak Bhatt. He was arrested on June 20. The special court had last extended his detention for three days on June 25.
The deadline expires today. Poudel's wife Domaya Poudel had filed a petition in the Supreme Court alleging that he was being illegally detained. Earlier, a show cause order had been issued in the petition and various files had been sought.
The debate in the Supreme Court today will decide whether to keep him in custody or release him on bail. If the Supreme Court orders his release, Poudel's term will not be extended, otherwise it will be extended again by a special court.
