The inauguration venue, Guesthouse Chaur, has been bustling since Saturday, the day before the first national convention of the Nepali Congress (NRC) to begin on Sunday. Organizers have said that all preparations, including the construction of the stage, have been completed. A board with the convention logo with the photos of party president Ravi Lamichhane and senior leader and Prime Minister Balendra Shah has been hung at the inauguration venue.
While preparations were underway, a crowd of party supporters and well-wishers were seen dancing, singing, and taking photos/videos. Representatives from various districts including Kathmandu were found there. Some were busy making accommodation arrangements. Some were observing the atmosphere of the convention after arranging accommodation.
Those who planned to rise to various positions in the convention seemed busy introducing themselves and asking for votes. Saroj Pokharel, the convention representative from Gorkha, said that she is staying at a relative's house as many friends are in Chitwan.
33 representatives from Gorkha are participating in the convention. Sharda Parajuli is the founder of the party in Gorkha. She said that she was proud to be a general convention representative for the first time and attend the party's biggest event. "We worked hard to establish the party in the minds of the people, now we will move forward in a more systematic way after holding the general convention," said Sharda.
General convention representative Narendra Khadka, who arrived from Doti, said that he was happy because it was an important moment in the party's life even though it was a summer program. Doti's group was planning to stay at a hotel in Narayangadh. Doti's representative Sharda Shrestha said that she was excited that the general convention would give new energy to the party more than the heat of Chitwan.
While coordinating with the general convention representatives, I met Tejendra Poudel, Secretary of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh Chitwan District Committee, at the guesthouse courtyard. He said that the general convention representatives were arriving in droves. Although most of them stayed in the Bharatpur area, some had gone to Sauraha. In the Sauraha area too, on Saturday afternoon, a convoy of vehicles of representatives who had come from different districts for the general convention could be seen. "40 percent will probably stay in Sauraha, because many people want to go to the tourist area of Sauraha after coming to Chitwan," said Secretary Poudel.
The general convention delegates will have to stay in a hotel at their own expense. Rajan Gautam, coordinator of the accommodation and food subcommittee and central member of the party, said that the delegates had been informed in advance about the details, services, facilities and prices of the hotel. He said that the delegates booked the hotel themselves. He said that the party had made the necessary coordination. Food and refreshments will be arranged for the delegates at the closed session venue from Monday.
The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) has sent invitations to the heads of various parties for the inaugural session of the party's first general convention. Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) General Secretary Kabindra Burlakoti informed that the parties in the House of Representatives and the National Assembly, as well as former Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai and Dr. CK Raut of the Janmat Party, have been invited.
He said that there is a possibility that party president Gagan Thapa will come from the Congress. Similarly, Pradeep Gyawali from UML will come, Barshaman Pun from NCP and Chairman Rajendra Lingdel from RPP will come. The closing session of the general convention will be held at the Industrial Exhibition Center in Bharatpur.
