The RPP, which has been going through internal disputes, has officially split. On Thursday, leaders including General Secretary Dhaval Shamsher Rana announced that they had left the party.
183 people, including top leaders, are leaving the party. Along with Rana, Vice President Mukunda Shyam Giri, former Minister Dilnath Giri, leader Keshav Raj Shrestha, and Working Committee member Narayan Prasad Koirala are also leaving the party. Similarly, Sagun Sundar Lawati, who was earlier stripped of the responsibility of spokesperson, has also left the party. Most of those leaving the party are central and provincial members.
Addressing a press conference on Thursday, General Secretary Rana also said that a new party will be announced soon. He also said that it has gone through a difficult situation for 4 years. The long-standing conflict between Chairman Rajendra Lingden and General Secretary Rana has turned into a split.
There had been a conflict within the RPP between Chairman Lingden and the General Secretary Rana faction for four years. The establishment faction has been accusing Rana of being in favor of an active king, standing against the party's policy of moving towards a constitutional monarchy, and trying to weaken the organization. The Rana faction, on the other hand, has said that the chairman has been using the 'stick' of action against leaders and cadres who hold different opinions in an arbitrary manner and has been fighting against it.
Last Chaitra, a gathering led by General Secretary Rana in Kathmandu had demanded the announcement of the date of the general convention within a week. The gathering had written a 3-point letter to Chairman Lingden demanding that the date be set for the general convention in Jestha. But the establishment faction has said that the general convention has not been called.
