The president of the main opposition party, Nepali Congress, Gagan Kumar Thapa, has urged the provincial and local governments not to repeat the wrongdoings of the federal government.

At a program on the issue of squatters under the 'Green Table' discussion series organized at the party's central office, Sanepa, President Thapa gave a clear message that the provincial and local governments should not repeat the shortcomings of the federal government.

He made it clear that using dozers in the name of managing squatters and unorganized settlements is unacceptable. He urged people not to follow rumors and fears about using dozers and stressed that the problem should be solved only on the basis of law, policy and plan. 'Nothing should be done beyond the authority given by the law,' Thapa said.

President Thapa emphasized that the problem of squatters, which has been complicated for decades, should be solved in a planned and humane manner, not through the use of force. He was of the opinion that steps should be taken only by focusing on the identification of real squatters, safe rehabilitation, ensuring basic services and long-term management.

Thapa informed that the party is monitoring and evaluating the issue by forming a separate team and also informed that formal correspondence will be sent to all provincial and local governments based on the suggestions received from the Green Table discussions.
