The Nepali Congress has opposed the government's approach to managing squatters, calling it 'cruel and inhumane'. The meeting of the party's Central Working Committee held on Monday expressed serious objection to the forcible removal of settlements without following the procedure prescribed by the constitution and law.

The meeting reminded that it is the constitutional responsibility of the state to provide housing to genuine squatters and landless citizens, and stressed the need to identify and take action against fake squatters. However, the Congress has objected to the government's use of force in sensitive matters, threatening citizens, forcibly evicting them, and even demolishing monasteries, temples, and schools while removing settlements along the river banks.

The Congress has concluded that the state's behavior is against democratic values, contrary to the 'right to live with dignity' guaranteed in the constitution. 'An attempt has been made to solve the problem based on force and oppression, not according to the rule of law,' the meeting concluded.

Meanwhile, the Congress has also expressed serious concern over the condition of holding centers and temporary shelters for displaced citizens. After receiving information that the conditions of children, women and the elderly are dire in those places, the Congress has decided to form a special monitoring team. The team will study the condition of health, food, drinking water, sanitation and security.

Similarly, it has been decided to pressure the government to identify the real squatters and arrange for long-term safe housing. In addition, the party's local levels, fraternal organizations and workers have been instructed to provide food, clothes and medicine to the affected citizens.
