Congress President Gagan Kumar Thapa has said that he does not have faith in the parliament of his own majority government. While going to meet the voters of his constituency Sarlahi-4 for the first time after the defeat in the House of Representatives election, President Thapa met with local party leaders and cadres in Chandranigahpur, Rautahat and commented on the postponement of the meeting without giving any notice even though the date of the House of Representatives has been fixed and called.
‘The government has now despised both the parliament and the citizens,’ he said, ‘The government has no faith in the house that has the majority.’ He further said, ‘The government has no faith in the parliament that has the majority. Shouldn’t the citizens be told anything, should they be told anything? The propaganda that the parliament was not prepared and that the meeting was postponed at the request of the MPs was a complete lie and a lie.’
He said that the previous prime ministers had manipulated the composition of the Constitutional Council to suit themselves, and that this was still the case.
‘We are doing this. Why didn’t you ask us even once, as we are in the opposition, that we are moving forward like this?’ His question was, ‘We ourselves are also in favor of reforms. We also went to the election to correct past shortcomings. We were of the opinion that we would make extensive changes in the issue of appointments to constitutional bodies.’
Chairman Thapa said that he would support the government in the work done on governance reforms, but would not remain silent if it led to the defeat of other parties and the House.
Chairman Thapa, who had fielded a candidate from Sarlahi-4 in the election held last Falgun, was defeated by Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh candidate Amresh Kumar Singh. He said that the defeat did not disturb him and that he took it as part of the democratic exercise.
‘Defeat and victory are natural outcomes of the electoral process,’ he said, ‘I fully respect the mandate given by the people of Sarlahi. This defeat is not a disappointment for me, but rather an opportunity to strengthen me and understand the problems of the people closely.’
President Thapa is scheduled to meet voters at various places in Sarlahi throughout the day on Wednesday.
