Amidst all-out pressure, Congress President Gagan Kumar Thapa is preparing to resign. Despite widespread pressure from within and outside the party's Central Working Committee to take the party forward without resigning, he has not responded.

A central member close to Thapa said that despite all that pressure, he is making up his mind to resign before the Central Working Committee meeting.

He had also met party Vice President Bishwaprakash Sharma on February 25 and informed him of his resignation. Sharma had tried to stop Thapa by saying that he should take a comprehensive and careful review of the defeat in the election and handle the situation and move forward.

After that, leaders and well-wishers from the party's Central Working Committee and outside the Central Working Committee have been pressuring Thapa to make the party stronger and more robust by not resigning.

Sources say that Thapa has reached the state of mind to resign, taking responsibility for the votes that the Congress got in the House of Representatives elections. ‘He can probably take a decision after preparing the list of MPs elected from the proportional representation,’ said a leader close to him.

The meeting of the Congress Central Working Committee after the election was held today.

Party spokesperson Devraj Chalise said that whether the president resigns or not is his personal matter and whether or not to accept the resignation is a matter of the Central Working Committee’s right.

Preparations are underway to call a meeting of the Central Working Committee within the first week of Chaitra.  Since Thapa did not back down from his decision to resign, about 3 dozen Central Working Committee members, including Joint General Secretary Prakash Snehi Rasaili, met on Saturday and pressured him not to resign.

‘A very big challenge has been faced by the party.  At this time, we should take control and move the party forward to further strengthen it.  "We told them not to resign, now we need to start preparing for the 15th General Conference," he said. "However, the president did not respond much to this."
