Minister for Women, Children and Senior Citizens Shraddha Shrestha has said that relations between the two countries are strengthening through the Nepal-China friendly football match.

Addressing the Nepal-China Friendly Football Match organized on the occasion of Chinese New Year 2026, Minister Shrestha said that Nepal-China relations are based on the five principles of peaceful coexistence, respect for sovereignty and geographical integrity. She stressed the need to strengthen sports and culture as a people-to-people diplomatic bridge, saying, "Sports transcend language, geography and political boundaries and serve as an effective means of building friendship, cooperation and mutual trust." She expressed gratitude for the support received from China in Nepal's development journey, especially in infrastructure development and humanitarian assistance and reconstruction assistance after the 2015 earthquake. Referring to the Chinese New Year as a symbol of renewal, harmony, tolerance and hope, she said that cultural programs such as the Lantern Festival and Dragon Boat Festival have become popular in Nepal in recent years. She said that such programs have played an important role in bringing the communities of the two countries closer.

The opening ceremony was attended by Acting Ambassador of the Chinese Embassy in Nepal Zhou Pan, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Youth and Sports Loknath Poudel, Member Secretary of the National Sports Council Ramchandra Mehta, ANFA General Secretary Kiran Rai, and Deputy Director of the Yunnan University Sports Institute Chen-Hen Qing.

A friendly match was held on Saturday at Dasharath Stadium between the Nepal U-20 Women's National Team and the Youth Women's Team of Yunnan Province, China, jointly organized by the All Nepal Football Association (ANFA), the Faculty of Physical Education of Yunnan University, and the Nepal Overseas Chinese Association, and in coordination with the Chinese Embassy in Nepal and the National Sports Council. The Nepal U-20 Women's Team defeated the Yunnan team by a margin of 3-1.     The program also featured performances reflecting the cultural diversity of Nepal and China.
