Jhalanath alleges that Dahal and Nepal's 'dictatorship style' is driving the NCP

What you should know

Nepal Communist Party leader Jhalanath Khanal has objected to the action taken against leader Haribol Gajurel after he supported a rebel candidate in Sindhuli-2.

He expressed dissatisfaction, saying that the party is being run in the 'dictatorial style' of coordinator Pushpa Kamal Dahal and co-coordinator Madhav Kumar Nepal as the central secretariat and standing committee have not been formed.

'Party committees have not been formed. The party is being run on the orders of the coordinator and co-coordinator,' he said. 'When the party should be run by collective decision, two people (Dahal, Nepal) have done whatever they wanted.'

The NCP had taken action against Maheshwar Dahal and Gajurel after Maheshwar Dahal filed his candidacy against Lekhnath Dahal from Sindhuli-2.

Khanal said that no discussion was held within the party while taking action against senior party leaders, calling it an act against the law.

'There should have been a discussion within the party while taking action against senior leaders.' It was strange to take action all at once,' he said, 'A party can be built only when there is a combination of party, policy, method and principle.'

He said that the action against Haribol Gajurel is a serious matter and should be discussed within the party.

NCP spokesperson Agni Sapkota said that action was taken against Gajurel and other leaders because they supported the candidacy against the official candidate. 'I heard that Jhalanathji was dissatisfied with that action,' he said.

He said that the leaders of the 20 parties and groups that united after the coordinator and co-coordinator ran the party alone could be confused.

'Methods and procedures should be implemented properly to strengthen the internal unity of the party,' he said.

The Dahal faction, on the other hand, has accused Gajurel of fielding a rebel candidate after not getting a ticket from Sindhuli-2. Gajurel has denied that.

‘I did not recommend a rebel candidate for not getting a ticket,’ he said, ‘I rebelled for the sake of the law.’

He rebelled by raising a rebel candidate in Sindhuli-2 on Saturday. On Sunday, candidate Maheshwar Dahal was expelled from his house without being an ordinary member.

The leader who was taken into action, Gajurel, accused ‘opportunists of occupying the house.’

‘Opportunists expelled those who said that the party should run according to ideology, politics and law,’ he said, ‘Now we are in favor of building a house by gaining power.’

Stating that no decision has been reached on the party formation, he said that discussions are underway on the future ideology and political formation.

Gajurel, who is a former deputy general secretary of the Maoists, is a colleague of coordinator Dahal. Dahal has taken action against Gajurel, who has played a decisive role since the ten-year armed war, for raising a rebel candidate in Sindhuli-2.

When the then Maoist Vice President Mohan Vaidya split the party in 2069, Gajurel openly supported the establishment. Last Ashar, when the then Deputy General Secretary Janardan Sharma expressed a different opinion, Gajurel stood by Dahal. When Dahal became Prime Minister in 2079, Gajurel became a political advisor for 10 months. He later resigned, expressing dissatisfaction with the working style of Dahal and his close associates.
