The current balance of power in the National Assembly has changed. The Congress has moved from the second to the first power, while the Nepali Communist Party, which was the first power, has dropped to the second power, losing eight seats. The UML remains the third power.
Elections for one-third of the members of the National Assembly are held every two years. Out of the 19 vacant posts, one was nominated and one was unopposed, and elections were held for 17 posts on Sunday. The Congress and UML alliance won the election by a landslide.
In the two-party alliance, the Congress was given 9 seats, the UML 8 and the JSP 1 seat. After the two-party alliance won all 17 seats, the Congress has become a major force in the National Assembly with 25 seats. In this election, no Congress MP position was vacant. 9 MPs have been added to the current 16.
The term of 8 out of 10 UML members had expired. Those whose terms expired were Indira Devi Gautam, Gopal Bhattarai, Tulsakumari Dahal, Devendra Dahal, Bhagwati Neupane, Bimala Ghimire, Sharada Devi Bhatta and Sumitra BC. There are also 8 people who will be elected from the UML. In this way, UML has managed to save the 10 seats it currently holds.
The total number of MPs of the NCP formed after the merger of the two parties was 25, including 17 from the then Maoist Center and 8 from the Unified Socialist Party. Of these, it has lost 8 whose terms have expired.
The terms of Gopi Bahadur Sarki Achhami, Gangakumari Belbase, Jag Prasad Sharma, Taman Swar, Narayan Kaji Shrestha, Maya Prasad Sharma, Radheshyam Paswan and Beduram Bhusal from the NCP had expired.
The then JSP Nepal and the Democratic Socialist Party had one each whose terms had expired. These two parties have also been merged. The unified JSP had four MPs in the National Assembly of Nepal. In which the terms of Mrigendra Kumar Singh and Shekhar Kumar Singh have expired.
The JSP had one seat during the alliance. In which the party's patron Mahant Thakur has been elected. Sunil Bahadur Thapa of the Congress had already been elected unopposed, while Bamdev Gautam, who was appointed by the President on the recommendation of the Council of Ministers, has also completed his term.
The formal farewell of all the MPs whose terms have expired will take place from the coming Falgun 21.
