National Assembly elections begin

National Assembly elections begin

Voting began on Sunday (today) to elect 17 members to the National Assembly.

Since one member has been elected unopposed out of 19 posts that will become vacant from 20 Falgun and one will be nominated by the President on the recommendation of the Council of Ministers, the election for the remaining posts has begun.

Article 86 (3) of the Constitution states that elections should be held 35 days before the vacancy occurs for the posts that fall vacant after the term of a National Assembly member expires. There is a provision for electing new members from the voters of the province from which the seat is about to become vacant. Voting has begun in the provincial capital. 

According to Election Commission spokesperson Narayan Prasad Bhattarai, voting has begun in all places. He said that voting began at 9 am and will continue till 3 pm. Preparations are underway to start counting as soon as the voting is over.

In the National Assembly member election, provincial assembly members, municipal mayors/chairmen and deputy mayors/vice presidents are voters. Out of a total of 2,056 voters, including 550 members of 7 provincial assemblies and mayors/chairmen and deputy mayors/vice presidents of 753 municipalities, 14 posts are already vacant due to various reasons.

16 provincial assembly and 11 local level office bearers have resigned to run for office in the upcoming parliamentary elections. The Election Commission has stated that those who have recently resigned will not be allowed to vote even though their names are on the voter list.
