The Nepali Congress has decided to nominate President Gagan Kumar Thapa as the Prime Ministerial candidate in the upcoming House of Representatives elections to be held on February 21. The party has stated that preparations are underway to formally declare Thapa as the Prime Ministerial candidate at the central working committee meeting to be held at the party's central office, Sanepa, today.
According to party spokesperson Devraj Chalise, the decision to nominate the prime ministerial candidate will be taken from the central working committee meeting. ‘We are putting forward President Gagan Thapa as the prime ministerial candidate with a new and innovative message of the Congress across the country,’ said spokesperson Chalise.
According to him, the Congress is preparing to go to the election with a clear leadership to address the mandate of the special general convention and the message of the Gen-G movement that has arisen along with the demand for good governance and development. ‘Our strategy is to provide clear information to the voters in advance about who will be the prime minister after voting,’ he said.
The special general convention of the Congress held at Bhrikutimandap in Kathmandu from December 11 to 12 elected a new central working committee under the leadership of Gagan Thapa. The office bearers and members elected from the same general convention are scheduled to reach the party central office in Sanepa at 1 pm today, Spokesperson Chalise informed.
However, the first and second central working committee meetings after the election of the president and the parliamentary board meeting formed to select candidates for the House of Representatives elections were held outside the party central office instead of at the party central office. The Thapa-led working committee is scheduled to enter the party central office today and assume office. "From today, the central working committee meeting will be held at the central office," said spokesperson Chalise.
According to him, the election committee will formally provide certificates to the central working committee today.
Other political parties have also announced their prime ministerial candidates targeting the elections to be held on Falgun 21. The CPN-UML has nominated Chairman KP Sharma Oli as the prime ministerial candidate, while the Rastriya Swatantra Party has nominated Balendra Shah as the prime ministerial candidate.
Within the Congress, the then president Sher Bahadur Deuba group had expressed disagreement with the initiative of leaders including Gagan Thapa and Bishwaprakash Sharma during the convocation of the special general convention. The new committee formed from the special general convention, which was held amidst their disagreements, is going to run the party in a new way.
