Three parties finalize candidates in Ramechhap, confusion still in Congress

The Nepali Communist Party (NCP) has nominated former Minister of State for Home Affairs Shyam Kumar Shrestha (Kushal) as its candidate for the House of Representatives election from Ramechhap. The party center finalized the candidate on Monday afternoon, informed NCP Ramechhap leader Taranarayan Shrestha.

Earlier, there was talk that one of the then CPN-Maoist leader Shyam Kumar Shrestha and the then CPN (Unified Socialist) leader Hom Bahadur Budhathoki would get the ticket . Shrestha, who is also a member of the Bagmati Province Secretariat and a provincial MP, said that Shyam Kumar Shrestha was finally selected as the candidate considering various political and organizational grounds .

Shyam Kumar Shrestha was directly elected from Ramechhap-2 from the then CPN-Maoist Center in the second Constituent Assembly election held in 2070 BS. Similarly, in the 2074 BS election, he was elected as a member of the House of Representatives by defeating Nepali Congress candidate Purna Bahadur Tamang (Kancharam) as a candidate from the Left Alliance.

In Ramechhap, which has only one House of Representatives constituency, the CPN-UML has already fielded young leader Madhav Prasad Dhungel . The Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSWP) has fielded Dr. Krishnahari Budhathoki .

The Congress, however, has not been able to finalize its candidate in Ramechhap till Monday. The names of 10 leaders have been recommended directly from the district to the center. The recommendation list includes former Minister of State for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation and District President Purna Bahadur Tamang (Kancharam), former President Ramchandra Khadka, Yubaraj Bhattarai, Bharat Chaulagain, Dr. Suman Karmacharya and Gelje Sherpa among others. Among them, the district leaders and activists estimate that Kanchharam has a strong chance of getting the ticket.

Since the NCP, UML and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) have already announced their candidates in Ramechhap, the election competition is set to become more interesting after the decision of the Congress.
