The Nepali Congress will finalize candidates for 165 constituencies by Monday evening for the House of Representatives elections.
The party's General Secretary Gururaj Ghimire said that the candidates will be selected based on their acceptance of change, popularity, qualifications, ability, and their impact at the local level.
The Congress parliamentary board has started discussions to distribute all the tickets by Monday. The discussion is focused on the list of recommendations received from the districts by forming groups at the provincial level for ticket distribution. General Secretary Ghimire said that in some places, since recommendations from below are controversial, candidates may be selected from outside in such places.
Congress President Thapa and Vice President Bishwaprakash Sharma have sought time from former President Sher Bahadur Deuba for greater unity within the party, but the meeting has not been held yet. Thapa and Sharma had wanted to meet on Friday evening. However, Deuba replied that he would send the news later.
Thapa and Sharma have also taken the responsibility of meeting former vice-president Purna Bahadur Khadka and leader Shekhar Koirala. 'They will meet and talk to the three main leaders themselves for greater unity within the party. In the selection of candidates, the criteria for distributing tickets to people who are popular among the common people, capable and involved in public life, regardless of their group,' said another official.
Leaders of leader Shekhar Koirala's faction have said that they will remain in the mainstream and not join the Deuba faction. They have reached the conclusion that they will also participate in the elections, saying that they will remain where the tree and the four-star flag are. Koirala is continuing discussions with leaders and well-wishers of his group in Baneshwor today.
After the Central Working Committee led by Gagan Thapa, elected at the special general convention, received legitimacy, former party leader Sher Bahadur Deuba's faction has not taken a decision on whether to participate in the elections or not. At the individual level, some leaders are announcing that they will not contest the election.
The Deuba faction has filed a case in the Supreme Court today against the Election Commission's decision. Since the election was scheduled for Magh 6, the same day as the nomination of candidates, the Deuba faction leaders are pressuring the commission to postpone the time for the nomination of candidates.
