Nepali Congress President Gagan Thapa has said that he expects the party's outgoing President Sher Bahadur Deuba, senior leader Shekhar Koirala, and outgoing acting President Purna Bahadur Khadka to play the role of guardians and protectors.
Responding to media persons ahead of the central committee meeting called on Saturday, President Thapa said that the differences seen in the party should be ended immediately. 'Let all the party friends gather in one place. We expect the role of guardian and protector from outgoing President Sher Bahadur Deuba. He should tell his friends across the country - stop this now. Our differences remained for a while, because he was not in an executive role. We also expect that role from senior leader Shekhar Koirala and outgoing acting President Purna Bahadur Khadka,' President Thapa said.
Stating that the newly elected office bearers and leaders are holding talks with the leaders within the party, President Thapa said that all the leaders will sit together and take the next decision within a few days. 'You can see that everyone has come together in two-three days and taken the party forward. I have already started the dialogue. Discussions have been held with party friends at various levels,' he said. He said that the party will move forward by including all the parties.
The Election Commission had decided on Friday that the party's legitimacy would be vested in a new elected committee led by Gagan Thapa. After the decision, outgoing acting president Khadka objected and expressed anger, saying that he would fight a political and legal battle.
President Thapa said in this regard, 'After it was decided that a new leadership would be elected from the Congress special general convention, the party friends said that they would go to the Election Commission and test whether it was in accordance with the constitution. It should be taken as a matter of course. We also went to the Election Commission.'
Thapa said that now that the dispute over legitimacy has been resolved, we should move forward unitedly. He said that he would include leaders of the new and old generations to build a Congress party that is in line with the new consciousness of the new era.
