As the process of selecting the leadership for the special general convention is about to begin, the final push for consensus is underway within the Nepali Congress. Leader Shekhar Koirala is in discussions with President Deuba to reach an agreement on the proposal prepared by the district presidents close to him.
Dhading President Ramnath Adhikari, Nuwakot President Ramesh Mahat, Chitwan President Rajeshwor Khanal, Khotang President Bishnukmar Rai, Sunsari President Kedar Bhandari and other leaders had prepared a middle-of-the-road proposal after sitting with leaders in favor of the special general convention.
The main points in the middle-of-the-road proposal are that the Central Working Committee should accept the special general convention and take ownership of it, accept and implement the documents passed by the special general convention, and withdraw President Sher Bahadur Deuba's name and signature for nominating candidates to the Election Commission.
Acting President Khadka is positive about such a proposal. If Deuba accepts, Acting President Khadka and leader Shekhar Koirala will attend the special general convention, said Dhading President Adhikari. Before going to the discussion with Deuba, General Secretary Bishwa Prakash Sharma had also discussed with Koirala.
‘We have prepared a middle-of-the-road proposal after sitting with the leaders in favor of the special general convention this morning. Shekhar Koirala has positively accepted the proposal prepared by our district presidents that the party should not be allowed to split under any circumstances. The leaders in favor of the special general convention have also positively accepted it,’ the official said, ‘If the president accepts and takes ownership of the special general convention, the problem will be solved.’
However, the leaders in favor of Deuba are not in favor of accepting the special general convention.
Spokesperson Prakash Sharan Mahat says that the Central Working Committee has exhausted the rationale for the special general convention and that it is not possible to move forward by accepting it when the circular has been issued by the Central Working Committee not to allow anyone to attend the special general convention called against the statute.
President Deuba is also not willing to accept the special general convention. Currently, leader Shekhar Koirala is holding discussions with leaders of the establishment faction, including acting president Khadka, at Deuba's residence in Maharajgunj in the presence of Deuba. Koirala has taken Joint General Secretary Badri Pandey, Joint General Secretary Jeevan Parivar, and central member Minendra Rijal with him for the discussions.
