Former Vice President Gopalman Shrestha has said that he is in favor of a special general convention after President Sher Bahadur Deuba began to show dictatorial tendencies even after giving the responsibility of the party's acting president to Purna Bahadur Khadka.
Speaking to Kantipur on Saturday, Shrestha said that the dictatorial trend should not continue in the Congress and that a new leadership should be selected from the special general convention. 'When President Deuba started showing dictatorial tendencies by saying that my signature will be used and who will do what, I did not accept it. That is why I decided to support General Secretary Gagan and Bishwa. I have called on everyone, I have urged them to make the special convention a success,' Shrestha said.
Shrestha also said that Deuba's dictatorship in the party was not right. 'His dictatorship was not right. He has not come to his senses yet. I have not come to his senses. I do not know what arrogance he has. He does not listen to his friends and brothers, he does his own thing,' Shrestha said.
Shrestha said that he decided to stand in favor of the special general convention and support it after discussing with General Secretary Gagan Thapa. 'After discussing with Gaganji at my residence for 1 hour, we decided to support the special general convention. Now, everything in the party should be taken forward through them,' Shrestha said. Shrestha also demands that Deuba resign from the party president.
'Sher Bahadur Deuba should resign. He should resign from active politics and stay,' Shrestha said, 'If he says that whatever I want will happen, it will not happen. If Sher Bahadur decides to leave politics by appointing the acting president and other office bearers, then you should consult and move forward. If so, the special general convention to be held tomorrow may be a policy convention or a manifesto convention for the upcoming elections.'
Shrestha also demands that if Deuba does not resign from the party president, the special general convention should elect a new leadership. 'If that does not happen, the special general convention should elect a new leadership. Why leave now?,' Shrestha said.
Gopalman Shrestha had always supported Deuba in the Congress. Shrestha said that he was now in favor of a special general convention after Khadka pretended to give the responsibility of acting president and did not return from Singapore after he did not recover.
Shrestha also said that he now regrets the support he gave to Deuba in the past. 'I supported and helped Sher Bahadur for a long time. I worked when there was a disaster. Now I regret it,' Shrestha said.
