Mayor Sampang announced on social media on Wednesday that he would contest from Sunsari 1. He wrote on social media, 'I will contest the House of Representatives election from Sunsari Constituency No. 1! Jai Mato! Jai Desh!'
He defeated the alliance candidate by running as an independent candidate in the 2079 local elections. He got 20,821 votes, while the then Congress-Maoist alliance candidate Kishor Rai got 16,059 votes. Similarly, UML candidate Manju Bhandari Subedi got 12,825 votes. In the deputy mayor's post, the alliance's Maoist candidate Aindra Bikram Begha won with 20,510 votes.

In Sunsari 1, JSP Nepal leader Ashok Rai won the 2079 House of Representatives election. He got 17,059 votes. He was challenged by Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh candidate Goma Tamang. She got 16,606 votes. Muksamahang Subba of CPN-Maoist Center, who was in third place, also got 13,087 votes.
