Prime Minister unhappy with ministers engaged in party-centric activities

What you should know

Prime Minister Sushila Karki has expressed dissatisfaction with the fact that ministers in the civilian government have started engaging in political activities.

She had spoken openly about this in the cabinet meeting on Monday. The Prime Minister had complained about the involvement of Minister for Physical Infrastructure and Transport, Urban Development and Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation Ghising, and Minister for Youth and Sports Bablu Gupta in party-centric activities.

'This is a civilian government formed on the foundation of the Gen-G movement,' she had said in the meeting, 'but you have engaged in political activities. Now please make it easy for me.'

A minister said that there was a long debate on this issue as soon as the meeting began. Quoting the Prime Minister's statement, the minister said, 'If you are involved in political activities, you may think, I have nothing to say. But, this is a civilian government, please think about it.' She had also warned the ministers concerned about this while leaving the meeting.

Not only ministers of the non-partisan electoral government but also advisors have started active in political party activities, which has raised questions about the impartiality of the government. It is seen that the question of impartiality in the performance of the elected government will be raised when joining a political party.

Minister Ghising is the Vice President of the National Independent Party (NISP). The agreement between the NISP and the Ujjal Nepal Party, of which Ghising is the patron, states that he will be the Vice President after the merger. Before that, Ghising had been participating in the activities of the Ujjal Nepal Party.

Minister for Youth and Sports Bablu Gupta had been active in the talks and discussions regarding the merger between the NISP and Ujjal Nepal. Both Ghising and Gupta are preparing to contest the House of Representatives elections directly from the NISP.

After the 7-point agreement between the NISP and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah on 13 Poush, Minister for Communications and Information Technology Jagdish Kharel wrote on social media, ‘A new day, a new beginning.  The dream of a beautiful and prosperous Nepal.  The destination is being decided.’ Regarding this, there is speculation that Kharel is also preparing to join the NISP and contest the elections.
